Welcome to Andrews Tree Care

Delivering professional tree surgery and arboreal services to the historic market town of Stroud, its five Valleys and the rolling Cotswolds of Gloucestershire. We’re always happy to offer advice and quote on jobs of all sizes, big or small.

Andrews Tree Care can provide a flexible approach to meet your requirements, being able to draw on a team of highly trained arborists to take on jobs of all sizes, from large tree dismantling, crane and mobile platform work, through to individual shrub pruning and hedge trimming work.

Andrews Tree Care was founded when my love of rock climbing, the great outdoors and horticulture all came together. I’ve worked around Stroud and the Cotswolds for over 15 years, along with five years spent in London, managing technical urban, suburban and commercial work with restricted space, access and logistical challenges.

I bring experience as an Industrial Rope-Access professional (working on commercial structures in the UK and Ireland) and 20yrs recreational climbing to my tree work, being familiar and practiced in established techniques from the world of sport rock climbing, ice climbing and mountaineering.

✅   15yrs+ experience working in the arboreal industry.

✅   Comprehensive Public & Employers Liability Insurance.

✅   professionally trained and NTCP certified.

✅   Qualified Industrial Rope-Access (level-1) professional.

My love for rock climbing has taken me all over the world to some spectacular places, and one that keeps coming back to mind again and again is Yosemite National Park in California where I’ve had the good fortune to scale the infamous Half Dome, 2300ft, the tallest vertical rock-face in North America.

Services

Tree Felling & Dismantling

Section Felling & Dismantling

In most cases trees are dismantled piece by piece using a range of equipment (ropes, spikes, pulley blocks and friction devices) to enable the arborists to dismantle the tree in a safe and controlled way. In some extreme cases a crane would be used.

Straight Felling

This classic technique used by woodsmen and lumberjacks the world over has very limited application in domestic situations. Straight felling brings down the tree in one single movement with hinge and wedge cuts made at the base of its trunk. This procedure requires large surrounding areas of safe ground to be available, free from obstacals, it’s rarely practical or a sensible felling option.

Tree Reductions

Crown Reductions

Each tree will be individually considered in terms of its shape, size, condition, situation and species.
This aspect of tree surgery is highly skilled and requires a keen eye. We carry out all aspects to high standard to leave your tree well considered and shaped.
We make sure all sections come down in a controlled fashion, working within the guidelines set out by the British Standard BS3998 (2010).

Crown Lifting

Crown lifting is the removal of lower tree branches to a given height. The height is achieved by the removal of whole branches or parts of branches which extend below this desired height usually not more than one third of the tree’s total height. This technique is usually used in the urban environment as it aids public safety as well as visual aesthetics.

Pruning

Pruning involves the selective removal of parts of a plant, such as branches, buds, or roots to facilitate plant health, re-direct growth or enhance productivity. Pruning can include targeted removal of diseased, damaged, dead, or non-productive plant structure. It’s important to have a good understanding of the specialized pruning techniques that apply to certain herbaceous plants verses those appropriate for perennial woody plants.

Deadwood & Thinning Services

Deadwooding

Tree branches can die for a number of reasons including light deficiency, pest, diseases and also root structure damage. Deadwooding is the process of removing these lifeless hazardous branches and other decaying wood which may present a danger, whether overhanging properties, public areas or footpaths.

Canopy Thinning

Canopy thinning is an integral part of maintaining healthy trees. It involves the removal of a percentage of branches or foliage within the tree canopy. Rubbing or crossing tree branches can result in growth problems, however, canopy thinning will facilitate keeping the tree or shrub from developing any further adverse effects. It can be a technical process, and needs careful consideration, depending on the species and its age, as excess thinning can lead to detrimental long-term plant health.

Canopy thinning also significantly enhances the light levels that filter through to ground level which can help promote habitat diversity and other scenic benefits. The precise degree to which a tree is thinned needs to be balanced and modified according to location, aspect and weather exposure.

Hedge Trimming Services

Hedge Trimming

Hedge trimming is an art. Although it seems like a straightforward task, hedge trimming can have disastrous consequences if carried out by an unskilled handler. The temptation is to keep on trimming when really it’s about crafting the shape of the hedge to produce a highly aesthetic end result. We always achieve the desired effect and will work with you to produce the result you want from your hedge.

Tree Support & Bracing Services

Cobra Bracing

Cobra is a dynamic tree support system specially designed to be flexible and shock-absorbing. The system was conceived in response to functional insights and scientific research results. Developed for practical use, cobra-bracing is a way of preserving valuable trees inexpensively, safely and with minimal intervention.

The dynamic bracing system reduces sudden stress, thus preventing branches from breaking during storms. In the most extreme situations this static load-bracing system also backs up as a secondary safety measure preventing the branch from falling, causing further damage, even if it does manage to break.

Tree Planting Services

Tree Planting

Put something back – it’s a good idea to think about the right tree in the right place if you want your new plants to have the best start in life. The most important considerations are good root health, weather, soil conditions and ongoing aftercare.
Planting a hedge can also be a great alternative to a fence with a natural look, as well as creating a thriving habitat for wildlife.

Stump Removal Services

Stump Grinding

Stump grinding involves the mechanical removal of stumps and any lateral roots of the tree to a specified depth, generally 300mm. Once the stump has been safely and satisfactorily removed, the remaining hole will be back-filled with soil or grindings. This is a relatively quick, but can be a noisy process, there are some limitations to consider, such as absolute necessity, site-access and cost-benefit considerations etc.

EcoPlug Treatment

Ecoplugs provide a great, safe, and cost-effective way to kill off a tree stump allowing it to decay naturally with minimal intervention. The active substance inside Ecoplugs is glyphosate which remains safely encapsulated until the plug is driven into the tree or stump. Once drilled and inserted the end of ecoplug is designed to burst, the active substance being released, with the rest of the plug remaining in place safely sealing off the glyphosate to the environment.

Neither humans or animals are affected by glyphosate and, additionally, it will not contaminate or harm groundwater due to its low mobility and rapid chemical decomposition rate.

  • I have used Rob for the last 3 years to maintain our large perimeter of 16ft conifers, in addition he has sorted out planning permission to make appropriate reductions to a very large beech tree that needed planning permission. He has carried out all these works to a very high standard, as a result of this five of my close neighbours have also employed him. I have told Rob that he has an ongoing arrangement with us.

    Mr. Jeff L.

  • I have been impressed by Rob's advice and service. He is honest, reliable and my first port of call for all tree care related matters.

    Thanks, Luciano

  • The tree work carried out by Rob was of a high quality and carried out in professional manner including all the necessary documents and photos required by Stroud District Council. Work was completed to the agreed schedule and the garden was left in a clean and tidy manner. I would highly recommend Rob again.

    Mr. Mike D.

  • Thanks, such a good service from Andrews Tree Care. Working within the Conservation Area and in a difficult position on a tree which overhung three different properties and had a powerline running through it presented a challenge that required care and understanding. You andyour colleague provided that in a timelyandefficientmanner. the work was completed within estimate and time scale and that is important to us as Trustees of the property. Well done and I hope that we can business again in the future.

    Best Wishes, Mike

  • In August 2013 Rob Andrews did a neat and tidy job of cutting down and removing six 32-year-old leylandii from my front garden. He worked efficiently, with no fuss, no mess, no hindrance to passing traffic and with the garden left ready for me to prepare for the next seasons. I was happy with his invoice, which matched his quotation.

    Mr. George K.

  • On recommendation from a neighbour we invited Rob to quote for work on our rather large Oak Tree. Rob not only offered a value for money quote but also looked after getting written approval from the Council for the work to go ahead. Rob and his co-worker arrived on the arranged day and efficiently carried out the work. We were delighted with the end result and have no hesitation in recommending Rob.

    Mr. Martin E.

  • We noticed Rob doing work for a neighbour and were impressed with what we saw so asked him to quote on pruning a very overgrown apple tree. He gave recommendations but also carefully listened to what we were wanting. The tree has been pruned beautifully. Rob's communication around costs and availability couldn't have been clearer. We would have no hesitation in recommending him.

    Caroline and Pete

  • I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Andrews Tree care, from the first meeting with Rob to look at the job, the quotation and right through to payment of the bill Rob and his team have been a pleasure to deal with. The job entailed pollarding of two trees in our garden that were enveloping an overhead cable, it was carried out whilst I was away and the only sign the guys had been there was the neat pile of firewood and two newly shaped trees. The rest of the garden, drive and pathways were completely free of any detritus from the tree removal. When any trees on our property need trimming or anything more drastic we will be calling Andrews Tree Care first.
